Full Name
Dr. Michael Tiemeyer
Speaker Bio
Michael Tiemeyer’s research career has focused on the function and structure of glycans and glycoconjugates in developing systems and human disease models. His laboratory comprehensively described the glycome of the Drosophila embryo, including its N-linked, O-linked, and glycosphingolipid glycans, and then used this system to explore regulatory mechanisms that generate neural-specific protein glycosylation. His laboratory has also developed various analytic strategies for glycomic and glycoproteomic investigation using small amounts of material and sequential extraction methods. Over the years, the Tiemeyer lab has contributed to the identification of selectin and siglec ligands, characterized mucin O-glycosylation, investigated the cellular consequences of aberrant glycosphingolipid biosynthesis in a human ganglioside deficiency, and engaged in many productive collaborations with exciting partners. In recent years, Dr. Tiemeyer has contributed to the growth and maturation of GlyGen as a resource for exploring glycoscience knowledge. Dr. Tiemeyer is currently the Joint Director of the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center and the Center for Molecular Medicine at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, USA.
