Dr. June Ereño Orbea
Speaker Bio
Dr. Ereño-Orbea is a biochemist and structural biologist with extensive expertise in the interplay between glycans and immune system lectins. During her postdoctoral fellowship at SickKids Hospital in Canada, she made a landmark contribution by characterizing the structure of CD22 (Siglec-2), a key inhibitory co-receptor of B cells and a prominent target for immunotherapy (Ereño-Orbea et al., Nature Communications, 2017). As an Ikerbasque Research Fellow for five years at CIC bioGUNE (Spain) in the Chemical Glycobiology lab led by Prof. Jiménez-Barbero, Dr. Ereño-Orbea investigated the molecular mechanisms of cancer-associated glycan interactions with antibodies and Siglecs. Her multidisciplinary approach combined NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, and molecular dynamics. Notable contributions from this period include her work on Siglec-8 (Lenza et al., JACS Au, 2022), Siglec-9 (Atxabal et al., ACS Chem Biol, 2024), and Siglec-15 (Lenza et al., Nature Communications, 2023). In 2024, Dr. Ereño-Orbea was appointed Group Leader of the Cancer Glycoimmunology Lab at CIC bioGUNE. The lab focuses on developing novel molecules to modulate immune responses mediated by the Siglec-sialic acid axis. These initiatives aim to uncover the complex roles of glycans in cancer progression and immune modulation, paving the way for innovative therapeutic strategies in glycoimmunology.
