Full Name
Dr. Dirk Lefeber
Speaker Bio
Professor Dirk Lefeber is heading the research on Congenital Disorders of Glycosylation at Radboud university medical center. He is leader of the Radboudumc Expertise Center for Disorders of Glycosylation and cofounded the Radboud Consortium for Glycoscience (RCG). Lefeber is also board member of the dutch Metabolic Disease research initiative (UMD) and the national RARE-NL foundation to foster therapy development for rare diseases. Lefeber is a chemist by training (Utrecht University) and, after a postdoc in infectiology, he became laboratory specialist clinical genetics at Radboudumc. Lefeber has received various national and international prizes, including a Vidi and Vici grant from the Netherlands Scientific Organisation and the International metabolic disease society (SSIEM). The translational research of Dirk Lefeber aims to uncover the biological mechanisms of glycosylation in patients with genetic metabolic disorders. He contributed to the discovery of >20 novel genetic diseases and unraveled several novel molecular pathways in sugar metabolism, resulting in improved diagnostics and novel therapies in patient care. His current research focuses on novel molecular mechanisms in sugar metabolism and development of novel therapies by application of metabolomics and glycoproteomics in patient materials and organ-on-chip models.
