Full Name
Dr. Kelly McNagny
Speaker Bio
Dr. McNagny obtained a BSc in Biology and Biotechnology from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and subsequently a PhD in Cellular Immunology with Max D Cooper, a founding father of B cell immunology, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He then performed postdoctoral studies with Dr. Thomas Graf at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) where focused on transcriptional control of stem cell fate and the commitment to macrophage, eosinophil, erythroid and thrombocyte lineages. He also identified a novel family of stem cell surface proteins (the CD34 family) and this then became the focus of his own laboratory at the University of British Columbia. He is a Professor in Biomedical Engineering and his work focuses on stem cell behavior, innate immune responses, inflammatory disease, kidney disease, cancer biology and immunotherapeutics. His research relies heavily on the use of transgenic mice and animal models of human disease, as well as high-throughput “omics” technologies to reveal the immune components that drive human disease. Nationally, he has filled leadership roles in the Stem Cell and the AllerGen Network Centres of Excellence, and the Centre for Drug Research and Development. He is currently Co-leader of UBC’s Immunotherapeutics Cluster and UBC’s Delegate to CIHR.
